I have been playing polo since I was 19 years old on the Cornell Collegiate polo team. My start was in arena polo which gave me a strong foundation for transitioning outdoors. I own my own polo farm in Maryland where I own 20+ polo ponies and I teach young players to play polo. I have played polo all over the globe with my children and my students. I had the opportunity to play with Adam Snow in 2003 when he was 10 goals in a 16 goal tournament in Aiken- I was rated 0 at the time and he asked me to play with him. I was not the sponsor, he needed a 0 to round out the team and had seen me play in the Aiken Ladies tournament and thought I was the strongest 0 out there. I soon went to 1 -goal outdoor after that and I have been 1 goal ever since. It was an incredible experience! I have traveled to play polo to some of the most amazing places : Zimbabwe, Sotogrande, Spain, Italy, Jamaica, Australia, Guatemala, Argentina. Going through the collegiate program and working with many school horses I have been very successful at riding horses in different areas and playing polo all over on any horse they give me. My most fun polo is playing with my children and my students. I enjoy playing defense ( #4) and letting my young players score the goals. My experience on the field, after coaching and playing for 30 years helps me to see the field and anticipate plays.
I’ve won a collegiate national championship – 1992 and was named PTF Player of the year. Playing with my daughter and student Sophie Grant this past fall 2018 and winning the US Arena Open ( at age 48) was a pretty rewarding feeling. Winning the US Open Handicap tournament in Houston (November 2018) with my daughter, Marissa besting 9 teams was pretty amazing.
I started teaching polo in 1997 at Garrison Forest School. I won 5 National titles coaching at GFS ( 4 girls nationals and 1 open nationals.) I opened my polo school ( Marlan Farm) in 2004 and have added 10 more national championships to my resume. 8 Girls National championships and 2 Open National Championships. Overall I have coached for 22 consecutive years in girls high school polo with my teams making it to the FINALS of Girls Nationals 18 times. I have coached 7 PTF Players of the Year. Many of my players go on to play collegiate polo.
