I started riding when I was 8 years old, which is pretty unusual for a girl growing up in the middle of Manhattan. My parents were very supportive of my horse addiction even though no one in my family had ever been on a horse. I show jumped competitively when I was a teenager and took a couple of polo lessons when I was visiting family out in La Quinta, CA, near Eldorado and Empire Polo Clubs. When I went to the University of St Andrews in Scotland I tried out for the polo team and the riding team and got onto both (in the UK there are several competitive levels for polo, so there is a beginner and novice level at Nationals). The camaraderie and the fun of the sport meant that polo took up more and more of my time, and in my second year of university I focused only on polo. After that I did a Master’s degree then Law School in London and I lived and kept my horses at Druids Lodge Polo Club in Salisbury. I had a great time there playing club chukkas and the occasional low goal tournament. I was heartbroken to leave the UK, but since then my life and my polo career has really changed. I took a job coaching beginners at California Polo Club in Los Angeles to cover the costs of keeping my horses. It took me over a year to afford to fly two of my horses over from England, but they are such a huge part of my life it was like leaving behind family. The summer after I brought two horses over I put together a team for the Rincon League 8 goal in Santa Barbara; my first serious tournament. I had to take a full 9 months off of playing competitively to be able to play in that same tournament this past summer, but it was absolutely worth it. Playing in Santa Barbara has been the most incredible experience, the polo is intense but the people are warm and inviting. I was honored to play for Klentner Ranch in the 8 goal where I met Dawn Jones who invited me to play with her in the Sunny Hale Invitational WCT Qualifier in Santa Ynez, my first introduction to women’s polo was 16 goal! Now I am moving to Santa Barbara with my horses and I hope to play in as much and as high level polo as possible!
1) Publishing a novel about polo: Players, A Game of Grit and Glory 2) Staying alive during the 8 Goal (mixed) and the 16 goal women’s! 3) Hitting a penalty in the 8 Goal that went high and dead center and having Adam Snow (who was on the other team) tell me while riding back to center, “great goal, excellent timing” – highlight of my polo career to date.
