Hello, my name is Megan Judge. I am a certified grass and arena polo umpire, certified by the United States Polo Association. I am a USPA Certified Polo Instructor. I graduated from Cal Poly State University, SLO in 2000 with a degree in Agribusiness. I received a Masters Degree in Agribusiness from Cal Poly State University, SLO in 2010. I competed for Cal Poly’s intercollegiate polo team from 1995-1999, and was a member of the All-West All-Star team all four years. I have been playing polo for over 24 years and I am rated 2 goals in the arena, 0 goals on the grass; 6 goals women handicap in the arena, and 4 goals womens handicap on the grass both considered a professional handicap. I have been the coach for the Cal Poly Polo Team for the past forteen years, and have led the womens team to Nationals 8 of the last 10 years; this past April I also took our Cal Poly mens team to nationals for the 2nd year in a row. I also coach two Scholastic Teams. Both my IS Girls and IS Open high school teams have been in the top 3 teams nationally for the past 4 four years. In 2017 all four of the teams I coach won their regional tournaments and went on to Nationals. Both my IS Girls and Open teams won in the quarter finals and lost in the semi-finals by 1 point in a shoot-out. I learned to play polo from my grandfather, William C. Carter Jr. who was a 30 year member of the Will Rogers Polo Club.
Won USPA Women’s WCT Santa Barbara 2015, 2016, and 2018. Won USPA Women’s WCT Eldorado 2018 Played in the 2017 USPA Women’s Arena US Open.
I am a level 1 certified USPA instructor. I have been coaching since 2002. Been playing since 1995. Some of the players that have come through my program have gone on to play professionally; many have gone to play as amateurs. I have also had many players come through that become instructors as well as managers, veterinarians, horseshoers, horse trainers, and successful business people. I have probably given over 2,000 Polo lessons in my life. I most enjoy teaching high school players. I also enjoy teaching beginner Collegiate players. A few of the names that come to mind a successful students that have gone on to be professionals in their industry and in Polo are Francesca Finato, Shannon Smull Mendez, Julie Empey, Athena Malin, Jillian Teitje, Kate Cappe and many more continue to play at local clubs around the United States. My major goal and mission is to create Polo players that know the rules, know how to be a good Sportsman, and add to the club atmosphere wherever they go. All my students know how to catch horses, load horses, groom horses, tack horses, exercise horses, stick-and-ball horses and prepare an arena for a match as well as put on a tournament. I like to make sure that all my students understand all the different facets of running a club. I think that this is important because then they have an understanding and respect wherever they go towards the people they play with.
