After analyzing the results of the National Women’s Testing tournament, the AAP has announced a new format for women’s polo tournaments. The biggest change will be the introdcution of 4-minute chukkers, during which players will not be allowed to change horses (except in cases of injury).

The purpose of the change is to avoid over-tiring horses and players, to minimize organizational inputs and logistics costs, to decrease the need for higher performing horses, and to create the opportunity to repeat the best horses.

The change has been met with praise from participating players, including Lia Salvo:

“I found the system of fewer minutes and more chukkers VERY GOOD. You do not see exhausted horses or players trying to stop the horses against another player. The horses that are repeated recover well.”

Each tournament will follow a set number of chukkers:

  • Low-goal tournaments: 6 chukkers
  • Medium-goal tournaments: 8 chukkers
  • High-goal tournaments/Women’s Open: 10 chukkers
